
Currently, Luke Baker is starring as Zack Mayo in An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical, which is open at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru until the 23rd March, before opening at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford on Monday. An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical is running throughout the year, ending at Hull in November, and Luke will be continuing his run in the musical, which is directed by Nikolai Foster. In 2022, Luke played Tony in Billy Elliot at Curve Leicester, and prior to this, he was in the original Sheffield and West End casts of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie as Dean Paxton. Amongst Luke’s further projects, he played Ren McCormack in Footloose, Theo and understudy Johnny in American Idiot, and on screen, he plays Sgt. Best in Masters of the Air for Apple TV+. Chatting with Luke, he told us about starring as Zack Mayo in the UK Tour of An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical, playing Tony in Billy Elliot and being part of the original Sheffield and West End casts of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
This year, you are starring as Zack Mayo in the new UK Tour of An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical, what are you looking forward to for performing in the production and how was it opening on 23rd February in Birmingham?
I’m incredibly excited about performing in the UK Tour of An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical. Opening in Birmingham on February 23rd felt like stepping onto a thrilling roller coaster. The anticipation of sharing this timeless love story with audiences across the country is exhilarating. I look forward to every note, every scene, and the electric connection we’ll create with the audience.

How does it feel to be heading out on tour and what do you enjoy most about touring with a musical?
Heading out on tour is like embarking on an artistic adventure. The thrill lies in exploring new venues, connecting with diverse audiences, and witnessing their reactions first-hand. Touring allows us to breathe life into the show in different cities, and I relish the camaraderie among the cast and crew during this journey. Plus, there’s something magical about the energy of live performances – it’s an addictive rush.
Can you tell us about the show and your character, and was there anything that drew you to the role of Zack?
The musical adaptation of the iconic 1982 film is a captivating blend of romance, courage, and redemption. I play Zack Mayo, a fearless officer candidate. His encounters with Paula Pokrifki ignite a passionate love that defies all odds. The show’s soundtrack, featuring hits from Madonna, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, and Blondie, adds depth to their extraordinary journey. Zack’s emotional transformation – from guarded to vulnerable – drew me to the role.

What is Zack like to play and how did you prepare for taking on the role?
To portray Zack authentically, I’m immersing myself in his psyche. I study the emotional nuances, the weight of his past, and the resilience required for his Navy training. Physically, I’m working on stamina and discipline. Zack’s journey is both physically demanding and emotionally charged, so I’m preparing meticulously.
What is it like being directed by Nikolai Foster, having also worked with him on other shows previously?
Collaborating with Nikolai Foster is a privilege. Having previously worked together, we share a creative shorthand. Nikolai’s vision for storytelling is bold and insightful. His guidance allows us to delve into characters’ depths, find authenticity, and elevate the production. It’s a rewarding partnership.

How was your time playing Tony in Billy Elliot at Curve Leicester in 2022 and working on the new UK production?
Playing Tony in Billy Elliot at Curve, Leicester was a joy. The camaraderie among the young cast, the energy of the dance numbers, and the emotional impact of the story remain vivid memories.

You were in the original Sheffield and West End casts of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie as Dean Paxton, what are some of your favourite memories from performing with the show?
As Dean Paxton in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, the show’s celebration of individuality and acceptance touched my heart. The Sheffield and West End runs were unforgettable.
How was it transferring with the musical to London’s West End and what was Dean like to play?
Transferring with Everybody’s Talking About Jamie to the West End was a dream come true. Dean’s journey resonated with audiences, and the vibrant London theatre scene amplified the magic. Dean’s complexity allowed me to explore layers of vulnerability and strength.
How did you find the experience touring with Footloose as Ren McCormack in 2016?
Touring with Footloose was electrifying. The energy of the 80s music, the rebellious spirit and the joy of dancing made it an unforgettable experience.

What was it like performing in American Idiot as Theo and understudy Johnny?
Playing Theo and understudying Johnny was intense, the raw rock energy and emotional depth challenges me as an actor.
As a screen actor, you play Sgt. Best in Masters of the Air, what was the show like to film?
Filming Masters of the Air was a remarkable experience. The historical context, the camaraderie among the cast and the attention to detail made it special. Sgt. Best’s character allowed me to explore wartime dynamics.

How did you get into acting and was it something you always wanted to do?
Acting was always my passion. From school plays to drama school, I pursued it relentlessly. The thrill of storytelling, the magic of the stage and the ability to evoke emotions drew me in.
What are some of your favourite theatre shows to watch and which would you like to see that you haven’t done so as yet?
I love watching diverse theatre – from classics like Hamlet to contemporary works like The Inheritance. One show I’d love to see is Hamilton.
How do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time I enjoy reading, hiking and exploring new places.
