Earlier this month, Magnus Ferrell released his new single Missed Your Chance along with a music video which he filmed with friends, and last October, he hosted his own single release party for his song Drinks On Me, with both songs co-written with Gabe Yaron. Magnus performed Radiohead’s Creep with Mike McCready & The Casual Acquaintances at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in 2023 for his father Will Ferrell’s Best Night of Your Life 2 show. This year, Magnus is continuing to release new music and hoping for at least one EP. Catching up with us, Magnus spoke about his recent single release Missed Your Chance, hosting his own release party for his single Drinks On Me and performing at Will Ferrell’s Best Night of Your Life 2.

Your new single Missed Your Chance was released on 16th January, can you tell us about the song?

Yes, absolutely. So, Missed Your Chance is about the concept of you moving on from someone who you thought you liked, but they are playing games, and instead of sticking around, you just kind of move on, simply because they missed their chance.

How long were you working on Missed Your Chance and what have you enjoyed most about recording it?

The process of working on it actually didn’t take too long since it was based on a real event, and whenever you write about something that actually happened, it’s so much easier to just retell that story. It’s like you have an outline already, and all you have to do is make sure it rhymes. And make it sound good obviously.

What was it like filming the music video for the release and how was it watching the completed video for the first time?

It was just a lot of fun filming, I was lucky enough to have the crew be all good friends, so it was truly just a blast. It was like we were all hanging out and goofing around with a camera in the background.

How was it releasing Drinks On Me in October and what was the song like to write?

Drinks On Me was a fun song to write, as our main focus was just to make it sound weird and off-brand, something that people haven’t heard before. Releasing it was fun as well, as I was lucky enough to be able to perform it in front of a super fun crowd.

How did you find the experience hosting your own single release party in Los Angeles for Drinks On Me?

In my opinion, performing is the best part of being a musician, and to be able to have that crowd show up to support was so amazing. I am so fortunate to have had such a supportive group of people there.

Who do you think your songs will appeal to and how has your music changed over time?

I think my songs tend to have a general application to a younger audience, but it definitely caters to whoever, I don’t necessarily think it’s limited to one group of people. My music in the beginning was definitely more jazz influenced, I would say it was closest to lofi beats with me singing. Now, I’d like to say I try my best to make my music resemble Bruno Mars, Charlie Puth, and Ruel. Essentially, a new take on pop.

How has it been seeing the fan response to your new music?

It’s been super surreal! It’s hard to believe that people will first of all just listen, and second of all really like the music.

Can you tell us about your songwriting process and what is it like co-writing with Gabe Yaron?

Yeah, it usually depends on what room I’m in and who I’m with, so it varies. With Gabe specifically, I’ve been lucky enough to know him for so long that writing can come up in the most random moments. I think of the one time I was doing the dishes, and he was playing the guitar, and then I just started singing a melody with a plate in my hand, and then we just developed it and got a song. Obviously, we have more normal sessions where we aim to write and not all songs come up spontaneously. That being said, since we’ve been doing this for a while, there is the opportunity for things to just pop up randomly, and that’s always fun.

What was it like performing Radiohead’s Creep with Mike McCready & The Casual Acquaintances at your father’s event – Will Ferrell’s Best Night of Your Life 2 – at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles last year?

That was definitely one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in my life. To get to perform in front of 6000 people, with such a legendary and talented band, it was just insane. I can’t believe I was able to do that, and I get such imposter syndrome whenever I think about it. I really feel like doing that show motivated me to keep going, as hopefully one day I’ll be able to perform my own stuff for crowds like that.

How did you get into music and was it something you always wanted to do?

I’ve been playing piano since I was five years old, I started writing music and getting into jazz when I was 13 years old. I really began getting serious about it when I was about 16 years old. I remember I was in my room writing a song and thinking maybe an hour had gone by. Next time I looked out the window it was dark outside and I had been writing for four to five hours and had no idea. I just thought to myself “Oh, if I can sit here and time passes by that quickly, maybe it’s something I really want to do”.

What are some of your favourite music artists to listen to?

Most recently, I’ve been listening to a lot of Silk Sonic, I think literally everything they do is a hit. The way that they’ve woven pop into R&B is just fantastic.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I usually will be playing piano, hanging out with friends or family, sometimes playing pickup basketball.

Do you have a favourite aspect of writing and recording your own music?

I love how therapeutic writing music is. It really helps you actually put your feelings into some sort of material thing that can exist.

What are you hoping this year brings for you and do you have any releases or live shows coming up that you can tell us about?

I’m super excited to roll out a bunch of new music. My goal is to put out the most music that I’ve ever put out this year, with at least one EP.
