Asher Angel is debuting his more mature and defined sound today, having released his new single Flip The Switch, a song he worked on for over a year with a team of GRAMMY-nominated producers and songwriters. In 2019, Asher collaborated with Wiz Khalifa for his debut single One Thought Away, which trended number one on YouTube for three days and has reached over 12 million streams to date. As well as being a music artist, Asher is a successful screen actor, starring as Billy Batson in Shazam! and last year’s sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and he played James in Darby and the Dead, which featured his original song One on One. This year, Asher is hoping to tour and has plans for further music releases. We talked to Asher about Flip The Switch (which released today – 26th January), collaborating with Wiz Khalifa on his debut single One Thought Away and starring as Billy Batson in the Shazam! films and James in Darby and the Dead.

How does it feel to be returning to music with your new single Flip The Switch, releasing today (26th January)?

I’m very excited to release my new single, Flip The Switch. This song is very special to me and it’s the start of a new wave of music from me. I can’t wait for all my fans and supporters to hear it!

Can you tell us about Flip The Switch and how long has it been in the making?

I’ve been working on Flip The Switch with my incredible music team for probably over a year. We’ve really taken that time to elevate and improve just the smallest details in the song.

What has Flip The Switch been like to write and record and what have you enjoyed most about working on new music?

What I enjoyed most about working on my new music is how it all feels true to who I am. It’s unapologetically me. I feel like I can finally write from a place of realness and rawness because I have experienced so many other things in my life now I’m an adult. I’ve also made sure to surround myself with people who uplift me and allow me to use my voice and creativity. It’s been the most amazing process!

Where did you get the inspiration for the lyrics and what do you hope listeners take from the song?

I hope the takeaway from Flip The Switch is to not listen to the haters and not listen to the doubters! There is so much negativity that comes with social media, as well as so much hatred in the world, and this song is really about instead highlighting the positivity and being confident and comfortable in your own skin.

How would you describe your music style and who do you think your music will appeal to?

I want to make music that gives my audience an escape from reality. My music is relatable, fun, and makes you feel good. I think we need more love and positivity in the world, and that’s the message I want to send through my music.

What was it like collaborating with Wiz Khalifa on your debut single One Thought Away in 2019, and seeing it trend number one on YouTube for three days and reach 12 million streams?

Collaborating with Wiz Khalifa on One Thought Away was such a surreal experience. I’ve always loved Wiz Khalifa’s music. It was insane to see the song’s surge on YouTube and seeing it become the number one video and trend for three days straight. It was very exciting! I’m thankful to everyone who listened to it!

As an actor, you star as Billy Batson in Shazam! and last year’s sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, what is Billy like to play and how is it getting into character?

Being a part of Shazam! and getting to portray an iconic character like Billy Batson was a dream come true for me! I’ve always loved superheroes, so getting to play one was definitely a bucket list moment. I’m immensely grateful for that opportunity!

How was your time playing James in Darby and the Dead and what was it like having your original song One on One featured in the film?

It was the coolest thing ever to have my song One on One included on the movie soundtrack. It was so fun to do a project where I was able to incorporate both of my passions at the same time. I remember hearing it come on during our first screening of the movie and I just could not believe it. That was definitely a pinch me moment!

How did you get into music and acting and did you always want to do both professionally?

I started doing musical theatre at a young age and that’s really where I found my love for the arts. I’ve always wanted to pursue both acting and music. I’ve always loved being on stage, getting to bring different characters to life, and singing my heart out. I just want to make people happy and this is my way of doing that.

Do you have any favourite music artists to listen to, and films and TV shows to watch?

Some of my favourite musical artists are The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, and Justin Timberlake. I love watching them and listening to them to pick things up that they do that I can then incorporate into my own process and musical style.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to spend my free time hanging out with my family because I love them so much. I also love hanging out with my friends and golfing with my dad. I’m pretty much your average guy! I’m very family-oriented.

What are you hoping this year brings for you and do you have any music or acting plans coming up that you can tell us about?

My goal for this year is to go on tour and to release a full body of music work. I really want to get out on the road and connect with my fans and supporters because I do all of this for me and for them. I love interacting with my supporters! This is definitely going to be a big music year for me!
