Maisy Kay released her latest single Doorway on October 6th, having already released two singles this year – After Midnight, which includes a music video, and First Time. All three of her singles appear on her EP Metamorphosis, which was released in November, and she recently had her first live TV performance on WSMV Nashville. Also this year, Maisy toured for the first time on JVKE’s What Tour Feels Like summer tour, and she is planning on collaborations, new music and more live shows. Answering our questions, Maisy talks about her single Doorway, performing on WSMV Nashville and her time on the What Tour Feels Like summer tour with JVKE.
Can you tell us about your new single Doorway, which was released on October 6th?
Doorway is a song about stopping somebody who either has negative intentions or is treating you poorly, from entering your life. It’s about almost fully committing yourself to somebody and, at the last second, realising the errors of your ways and pulling back from the situation. I wanted it to sound very freeing.
When did you start work on Doorway and how much did the lyrics change over time?
Doorway was written in 2020, during a very lonely period. I had told my co-writers I didn’t want to write a happy song if I wasn’t truly feeling happy. So, we created the concept of a happy sounding song, production-wise and melodic-wise, with more melancholy lyrics.

What was it like performing the song on WSMV Nashville?
Performing Doorway at WSMV Nashville was incredible. It was my first ever live television performance, and it was an honour to do it there in the city of Nashville. Everyone was so welcoming, and it was an experience I will never forget!
Earlier this year, you released your recent singles After Midnight and First Time, how was it having these as your first music releases of the year?
It was an amazing experience, especially because I was performing the tracks on tour pre and post release, and watching the fans learn the lyrics despite the songs not being released yet was unforgettable. I’ve wanted to release these songs for years, and I couldn’t have asked for a better debut.
How was it filming the music video for After Midnight and what was it like seeing the completed video for the first time?
Filming the music video was a special experience for me, as it was my longtime collaborator and friend Shervin Lainez’s first music video shoot. I’m honoured to have worked with him for it, and I think the entire team did a wonderful job. I was so excited to watch it because I knew the video symbolised a whole new era of my music!
What has it been like seeing the response to your new music and who do you think your songs will appeal to?
It’s been amazing seeing the response, I gained a lot of new listeners from tour and it’s so fun seeing the excitement for new songs, as well as reignited love for older records. I hope my songs can appeal to anyone who feels unsure of themselves, or where they’re at, or where they’re going. Life can be scary and overwhelming, and I’d love my music to help anyone dealing with that.
All three songs feature on your recently-released EP Metamorphosis, what were you looking forward to for your listeners to hear the EP?
I was looking forward to the fans’ reactions on the new sound. Some tracks I have sat on for years waiting to be released, and this EP is undoubtedly the project released that I am most proud of. I just couldn’t wait to share it with everyone that’s supported me!
What has the EP been like to work on and how has it been deciding on the final tracklist?
The final tracklist actually came together super easily, it’s a combination of songs I wrote as far back as 2020, to a song I wrote earlier this very same year! They feel like puzzle pieces to finally discovering the sound and imagery I am happy with, so working on the EP was incredibly easy. Everything from the tracklist to the name to the cover art, it flowed very smoothly.
You have recently finished performing on JVKE’s What Tour Feels Like summer tour across North America, how have you found the experience?
The tour with JVKE was one of the best experiences of my life. It was my first ever tour, and there is nothing that comes close to the joy of seeing and meeting listeners and sharing that excitement and wonder together.
Can you tell us about some of your favourite highlights of your music career so far?
I think some of my highlights have been doing a song in Na’vi with The Fat Rat, having a song in the ocean conservation documentary with Arnold Schwarzenegger called Wonders of the Sea and going on my first ever tour with JVKE!

Where does your love of music come from and how did you get into it?
I have always loved music since before I could talk, but I grew up loving musical theatre and Disney movies. I wrote my first musical at 10, and started going into my first recording studio shortly afterwards.
What are some of your favourite music artists to listen to?
I love Adele and Lewis Capaldi, and I’m definitely a Swiftie!
How do you like to spend your free time?
I love to draw and paint, and I’m a big gamer. I also have a cat named Freddie Mercury, who I love to spend time with!
Do you have any upcoming plans that you can tell us about and what are you hoping the next few months bring for you?
There are some exciting collaborations coming up as well as new music, and we definitely plan to be back on the road soon!
