Dulcé Sloan

Dulcé Sloan is making her Soho Theatre debut on Monday 17th until Saturday 22nd March for a strictly limited run at the Dean Street venue, with tickets on sale for the show from the Soho Theatre website. Recently, Dulcé has been performing shows with Josh Johnson, and she releases a weekly podcast with Chrissy Choi called Chasing K-Dramas. From 2017 to 2024, Dulcé was a senior correspondent and rotating host for the Emmy Award-winning series The Daily Show, and in Series 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Dulcé appeared as a guest judge. As an actor, Dulcé voices Honeybee Shaw across all five already-released series of the animated sitcom The Great North on FOX, and for her first starring role in a movie, she played Charlene in the 2020 film Chick Fight, and last year, Dulcé released her own book called Hello Friends! Stories of Dating, Destiny and Day Jobs. We caught up with Dulcé about her upcoming comedy show at Soho Theatre next week, her time on the Emmy Award-winning series The Daily Show and voicing Honeybee Shaw in the animated sitcom The Great North.

How does it feel to be making your Soho Theatre debut on Monday 17th March and what are you looking forward to for performing at the venue?

I am so excited to perform at the Soho Theatre. I was talking to my manager about how much I wanted to perform in London again and then we heard from Soho the following week so it was meant to be!

Can you tell us about your show and who do you think it will appeal to?

This show is the most personal set I have ever written. I talk about living with and taking care of my family, dating and so much more. I think this set will appeal to everyone because we all know the frustration we felt living with our parents as teenagers now imagine that as an adult.

Where did the inspiration come from for the show and how much has the material changed over time?

My family and my desire to have a family of my own inspired this new set. The core of the joke usually stays the same but how I tell the joke changes. I’m always looking for the best way to share my material and myself to the audience.

How long has the show been in the making and what has it been like to work on so far?

This show has been in the making for the past three years. There are jokes that have grown and been created for this show but there are other jokes that I have taken out because they fit. The material is locked in but there is always a way to make it fun.

How are you preparing for your run at Soho Theatre, which is booking until Saturday 22nd March?

I am looking up places to eat, sights to see and making sure I get enough rest in between shows.

What do you hope audiences take from your performance?

I want them to have a good time and leave with a better understanding of me as a person. I use laughter as a way to express myself and to give the people a peek into the most ridiculous times of my life.

We understand you have recently been doing shows with Josh Johnson, how have these been going and can you tell us about your previous podcast – Hold Up with Dulcé Sloan & Josh Johnson?

I have been on the road with Josh and it has been a great experience. We have been friends since 2016 and I thought he was a comedic genius the moment I saw him on stage, so to see him selling out shows all over the country and soon the world has been so fulfilling and happy to see. Josh and I haven’t done the podcasts for a few years now. I have a new podcast called Chasing K-Dramas with Chrissy Choi about our love for Korean dramas that drops every Wednesday. It’s available on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.

You were a senior correspondent and rotating host for the Emmy Award-winning series The Daily Show from 2017 to 2024, what are some of your favourite memories from working on the series?

Some of my favourite moments from the show were sitting behind the desk with Trevor (Noah) in 2018 when I had to be his voice because he was on vocal rest for a week. Meeting Jennifer Lewis because she is a whirlwind of a person who gives me life. My favourite memory was when we moved studios during COVID and we taped with no audience. I was able to have more input as to what I was going to say and I got to really make Trevor laugh instead of the audience.

How did you find the experience of being a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race in Series 14 in 2022?

It was a dream come true!!! I had been watching the show since 2009 when it was on Logo before it moved to VH1 and MTV! I was a judge on the roast episode so I got to be there for two days of shooting and I got to meet all the talented queens. I would love to judge again!

As an actor, you have voiced Honeybee Shaw across all five series of the animated sitcom The Great North on FOX, what is Honeybee like to voice and what do you enjoy most about recording for the show?

I love voicing Honeybee! She is so happy and optimistic and there are many times that recording her and watching the show has lifted my spirits.

How was it playing Charleen in the 2020 film Chick Fight?

It was an adventure! It was my first starring role in a movie so I was very excited. Not to mention we filmed in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which was beautiful! I had to learn fight training, how to take a punch and how not to get covered in fake blood. The fight scenes were filmed in an abandoned warehouse full of dust and mould so we were all getting sick but with cortisol and vitamin B shots we got through it. Working with Fortune Feimster was the cherry on top.

Can you tell us about your book Hello Friends! Stories of Dating, Destiny and Day Jobs, which you released last year, and what was it like writing your own book?

The book is organised into essays packed with lessons and laugh-out-loud scenes from my life. Including a childhood spent moving between cities, starting my own business selling toys at a Miami flea market, and being a Black kid in a predominately white school and much more. I believe I have a story of resilience that will resonate with everybody.

Where does your love of comedy come from and how did you get started in the industry?

My love of comedy comes from my love of comedians. Now I don’t agree with all of them by any means, but the ones that I do, are the people who understand me the most and see the world how I see it.

Do you have any favourite comedians to watch?

Josh Johnson (of course), Roy Wood Jr, and Shalewa Sharpe.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to spend my free time in my craft room colouring my new colouring books or making jewellery, exploring my new found interest in teas or hanging with my cat Queen Esther.
