Answering our questions, elijah told us about his recent single release losing a friend, his EP bright orange everglow and his upcoming ilu 24/7, 365 Asia tour.
Your new single losing a friend was released on March 8th, what was the song like to write and record?
Writing and recording losing a friend was a bit of a roller coaster. It was diving deep into a ton of painful memories and emotions but, all in all, it felt cathartic to pour all that heartache into something beautiful.
Where did you get the inspiration for the lyrics and can you tell us about the meaning of the song?
The lyrics are as honest as I could be about the situation. Losing someone close feels like a piece of you is missing, and I tried to encapsulate that in the song.
How long have you been working on losing a friend and what do you hope listeners take from the release?
I’ve been tinkering with losing a friend for a hot minute now. Been like my little musical baby, you know? I hope folks listening can vibe with it and maybe find a bit of comfort in knowing they’re not alone in those feelings.
What was it like collaborating with MacKenzie Porter on last girl in November?
Collaborating with MacKenzie Porter was incredible. She’s got such an incredible voice. last girl came together so quickly with her, it felt kind of meant to be. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
How was it seeing the response to your single 24/7, 365 last year?
Seeing the response to 24/7, 365 blew me away! You always hope your music can resonate on a large scale, but when it does it’s pretty impossible to replicate the feeling. I am so grateful for everyone making the song their own.
What was it like releasing your EP bright orange everglow?
Releasing bright orange everglow was so fun! I was so excited and sure of all of the songs, and it felt like the perfect time to put them out. I’d gotten engaged a few months prior to writing the project, and all the songs just fell out of me.
Can you tell us about your songwriting process?
I generally start out with a melody or a concept and go from there. More often than not, I’m starting with gibberish lyrics and filling the words in later on.
How do you think your music has changed since the release of your debut single lights in 2021?
I’ve become more confident in exploring different genres and emotions. The biggest difference now is that I’m not as afraid of taking risks.
What can audiences expect from your upcoming ilu 24/7, 365 headline tour in Asia this May?
I’m so excited for the tour! It’s going to be such a fun month. Fans can expect so much new music, reimagined versions of songs, and super intimate, interactive moments too!
How are you preparing for the tour and have you decided on the setlist as yet?
Lots of rehearsal time! I want to make the show as perfect as possible. As for the setlist, it’s kind of ever evolving. I have so much new music I’m looking forward to playing at these shows too.
It has been announced that you will be supporting Niall Horan in Indonesia at the Beach City International Stadium on May 11th, what are you looking forward to for this show?
Supporting Niall Horan in Indonesia is going to be wild! Playing for his fans and experiencing that many people in an arena is going to be a dream come true!
How does it feel to be performing at the 2024 Seoul Jazz Festival?
I’m absolutely stoked for the Seoul Jazz Festival. There are so many firsts on this tour, I’m trying to set myself up to be as present as possible for all these incredible moments.
Can you tell us about your experience on the road for your sold-out what if it was fun? tour in Canada last year?
The what if it was fun? tour was, in fact, so much fun! It was wild to be able to accomplish my first headline tour, and it definitely inspired me to explore different things with the show and the music.
Where does your love of music come from and how did you first get into making music?
I grew up in a super musical family. I started playing guitar around the age of eight and progressed to DJ-ing and producing in my teens. I never thought I’d be a singer, but I kind of fell into it when I started writing songs. They felt so personal to me that I couldn’t give them away.
What are some of your favourite artists to listen to?
Right now, I’m super into Bon Iver, Dominic Fike, and Kacey Musgraves.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I love snowboarding, working out, and travelling with my family when I have time off.
Do you have any music plans coming up that you can share and what are you hoping this year brings for your career?
So much new music and a bunch more shows announcing soon too! I’m very excited for the rest of 2024.
