With Hello Sister starting to write their new song Somebody Said in their hotel room, they have now released it as their latest single alongside an official video using footage from their live shows to create a cartoon lyric video. Hello Sister is made up of Grace (oldest sister on lead vocals and bass), Gabriella (middle child – background vocals and guitar) and Scarlett (youngest child as singer and drummer) and, this year, their previous releases have been Things You Never Said, Lately, Invisible Girl and Tragic. The trio often upload covers to their social media platforms, and they have recently performed at the world’s largest surfing competition for women – the Super Girl Surf Pro at Oceanside, California. In 2021, Hello Sister auditioned for America’s Got Talent for the show’s 16th season, where they received four yeses and a standing ovation from Simon Cowell. We chatted to Hello Sister about their new single Somebody Said, performing live shows and auditioning for America’s Got Talent.
Can you tell us about your new single Somebody Said and where did you get the inspiration from to write the lyrics?
Somebody Said is about rumours and what haters will say behind backs. Although the things they say can be hurtful, it’s important to not let it get to you! They’re probably jealous. 😉😉
What was the song like to write and how long were you working on it?
We started working on the song in a hotel room on vacation after having the idea of the hook Somebody Said. All the ideas sort of flowed really easily once we started, and it was really fun to write!!
How was it working on the official video for the release?
For Somebody Said, we actually used some footage from our live shows and compiled it together to create a cartoon lyric video!
What has it been like seeing the listeners’ response to Somebody Said so far and who do you think will enjoy listening to it?
It’s always great hearing feedback from our listeners about our new releases and we just hope people can relate to the song and use it as an escape.
How was it releasing your earlier singles of the year – Things You Never Said, Lately, Invisible Girl and Tragic?
It’s been so fun finally releasing all our new music this year and we’re so excited to release more in the years to come!
Have you each had a favourite song to work on from this year’s single releases and how would you describe your music style?
Scarlett – Tragic and Things You Never Said.
Grace – Things You Never Said.
Gabriella – Lately.
What is your songwriting process and how much has it changed over time?
When we first started writing music – our dad, who is also a songwriter, would help us throughout the process of writing the song. Now, it’s usually when one of us has an idea of a song lyric or melody, we record it in our voice memos on our phone, or write it down. We then show the ideas to each other and work on it together!
Can you tell us about some of the recent shows and events you’ve performed at?
We’ve recently performed at the world’s largest surfing competition for women, the Super Girl Surf Pro in Oceanside, California! This event was so cool because we got to perform with many artists including Beach Weather, Sean Kingston, Aloe Blacc and more!
What do you enjoy most about performing live and what can audiences expect from one of your shows?
We love performing live because it’s a way to connect with the audience and it’s always so fun to see them dancing and singing to the songs we’re playing!
How did you find the experience auditioning for America’s Got Talent in 2021?
We were on Season 16 of America’s Got Talent in 2021 and it was such a cool experience! We got four yeses from the judges and a standing ovation from Simon Cowell!!
You also record covers for social media, how do you decide which songs to cover and how is it performing music by other artists?
We love taking songs that are popular on the radio or on social media sites and putting our Hello Sister style on them!!
Where does your love of music come from and how did Hello Sister come about?
We started our band around five years ago and got inspired from our dad who was in a band when he was younger. We started in individual lessons on our instruments, and then decided we should just do it together! We’ve loved it ever since!!
Can you tell us about each band member and how is it working together on music as sisters?
Grace is the lead singer, bass player and oldest sister! Gabriella does background vocals, is the guitar player and middle child, and Scarlett is the singer, drummer and youngest child!
We love working together as sisters, it’s a way for us to share our love of music and bond!
What are each of your favourite music artists to listen to and how do you all like to spend your time away from music?
We love listening to artists like Paramore, Taylor Swift, Billy Joel, The Aces, Cage the Elephant, The Beatles, and more!! Aside from music, we are also on the cross country and track teams at our school!
Do you have any upcoming plans that you can tell us about and what are you hoping the rest of 2023 brings for you?
We are planning on releasing more and more new music and playing many more live shows in the future! We’re super excited to share these new songs with you guys! Stay tuned!!
