Towards the end of last year, Henry Meredith made his professional stage debut as Fleance at the Almeida Theatre in their production of The Tragedy of Macbeth, with the show having five live streamed performances in October. On screen, Henry had a recurring role in the second series of The Great as Maxim alongside a cast including Elle Fanning, and he’ll be appearing in the upcoming interactive feature film The Gallery. Henry answers our questions about his professional stage debut in The Tragedy of Macbeth, the upcoming feature film The Gallery and his recurring character of Maxim in Series 2 of The Great.

What was Fleance like to play in The Tragedy of Macbeth at the Almeida Theatre?

Exciting. Thrilling! I like the fact that he escaped and survived to show that Macbeth’s plan had not worked. The idea of returning to one day be the King was very cool and I really liked holding the gun although it was very heavy!

How did you find the experience performing in the show for your professional stage debut?

It was a fantastic experience, working with incredible people who were so friendly. I really enjoyed the fight scene and the fake blood and time with Ross Anderson, who played my dad, Banquo. I love performing so the whole experience made me really happy.

Do you have any stand-out highlights from your time in the production?

The highlights of the play were the fight scene and the dinner scene. Also, probably the last night and having fun afterwards. I met Tom Hiddleston afterwards who had seen the show and he was really nice. Also sharing the stage with Saoirse Ronan was an experience to remember and performing for the live stream being shown over the world! I also really remember how lovely Akiya (Henry), who played Lady Macduff, was to us children!

You play the recurring role of Maxim in Series 2 of The Great, can you tell us about the character?

He is a charming eight-year-old noble boy who has inherited a lot of money and he’s part of an interesting storyline.

How was your time on set of the series and working with the rest of the cast?

Again, a brilliant experience with an amazing cast who were so normal and kind despite their achievements. I really enjoyed doing my speech in front of the whole cast in Episode 10! The costumes are so cool and the sets are stunning. What an amazing job!!

What was it like getting into character and is there anything you enjoy most about filming your role?

The costumes are so amazing that it really helps you feel like the character. To be honest, being cheeky comes naturally to me!! I practiced my posh voice to get into character.

What can you say about working on upcoming feature film The Gallery?

I can say it was my first job playing the son of Kara Tointon in an interactive film where the viewers choose the time frame and series of events. V cool.

How different do you find performing on stage to filming a screen role?

Being on screen is easier in my opinion because you have a few chances to get things right. Also, there are no quick costume changes. In Macbeth I had six costume changes!

Do you have any favourite films, TV or theatre shows to watch?

I’m a fan of Hamilton, Alex Rider, James Bond and Marvel movies.

Is acting something you always wanted to do and how did you start?

My brother (Jack Meredith) has done a lot and had amazing experiences so I started auditioning to see what happened and for fun!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Tennis, Minecraft, writing stories and Xbox.

What are you hoping 2022 brings for your acting career?

More amazing roles and an invite back for Season 3 of The Great would be brilliant.
