With new superhero film Thunder Force recently being released on Netflix, Bria Danielle Singleton can be seen in the cast playing the tween version of Octavia Spencer’s character Emily. Bria has previously played Khadijah in the short film This Little Light and Nellie in an episode of TV series Better Things and her other work has included voiceover roles which has heard her as Beth in Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You. Speaking with us, Bria tells us about being in the cast of Thunder Force, filming as Young Emily and her voiceover roles.
How was it filming as Young Emily in Thunder Force and what can you tell us about your character?
It was amazing shooting the film. Young Emily is extremely intelligent, quiet and very determined.
Can you say about the film and who do you think it will appeal to?
I can say the film is a funny, action superhero film that has a good message about friendship.

Do you remember how you felt finding out you’d booked the role and reading the script for the first time?
I was so excited when I booked the role, I screamed. When I read the script for the first time I fell in love with the character.
How did you prepare for playing Young Emily and what was it like being the young version of Octavia Spencer’s character?
I prepared for the role by thinking about how Emily would feel after she lost her family and how determined she was to finish what they started. Also, I know how it feels to be bullied, so I felt sorry for her.

What are some of your favourite memories from your time on set of the Netflix feature film?
Some of my favourite memories were working with Ms. Melissa McCarthy, Mr. Ben Falcone, Vivian Falcone, Jackson Dippel and Braxton Bjerken. In between takes the parents and the kids had an UNO game tournament going on. It was brutal, but so fun. I also got to be on set and meet Tai Leshsun, Mia Kaplan and, of course, work with my hilarious set grandmother Ms. Marcella Lowery.
How different was it working on this film to your previous productions?
Working on Thunder Force was different than my other projects because it was a bigger production. I also travelled to Atlanta which was fun.

You played Khadijah in the short film This Little Light, can you tell us about the character and film?
Khadijah was a little girl who suffered from a mental health disorder. She lived with her mom, who was struggling with accepting that.
What was it like filming as Nellie in an episode of Better Things?
That role was small but fun. Ms. Pamela Adlon was so sweet. I also met her kids on set and they were really nice.

How did you find the experience voicing Beth in All I Want for Christmas Is You?
Omg! At first when I booked the role of Beth, I didn’t know it was Ms. Mariah Carey’s project and she was going to narrate it. When I found out, I was super excited.
You’ve had other voiceover and screen roles, can you say about some of them?
I worked on a Cartoon Network show called Clarence which was a really fun role. I voiced the character, Bella who is so adorable. I also voiced a character by the name of Camille on a Nickelodeon show called The Loud House. That role was hilarious! I’ve also done several ADR projects. ADR means Audio Dialogue Replacement.

What do you enjoy most about having an acting career?
I enjoy getting to play characters that have different personalities and life experiences than me.
Where does your love of acting come from and do you have any favourite actors you would like to work with?
My love of acting comes from just loving the arts. I love music, art, theatre etc. Some of the actors I would love to work with are Elizabeth Olsen and Chris Evans. I think they’re amazing.

How do you like to spend your time away from your career?
I like to spend my time going on vacations with my family, hanging out with friends and family and just relaxing.
How have you been keeping busy during the pandemic?
During the pandemic, I literally binge-watched a bunch of TV shows and movies.
