Madelyn Miranda’s first experience in short films were in ‘Clouds’ and ‘Bernice’ before making her motion picture debut as Young Dora the Explorer in the new cinema release of Dora and the Lost City of Gold being released in the UK later this month. Having filmed in Australia’s Gold Coast, Madelyn enjoyed her first experience of being on set of a major production and had chance to attend the recent film premiere. Ahead of the cinema release, we chatted with Madelyn about filming for ‘Clouds’ and ‘Bernice’, being part of Dora and the Lost City of Gold and becoming Young Dora.
How long have you been acting and where did your interest begin?
I started acting when I was four years old. My mom said I always loved taking pictures and putting shows together for her so she thought I would do good in this industry. Once I started booking I had so much fun working on set and seeing myself on TV.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold will be released worldwide later this month, how does it feel knowing you’ll be part of a huge release?
It’s so amazing to say that I’m playing Dora in this huge movie. Dora is someone I grew with and she’s known and loved all around the world so to be a part of this movie is an honour.
How did you feel when finding out you had booked the role of Young Dora?
When I found out I booked the role I was speechless. I really couldn’t believe it. I go to so many auditions and never hear back and when I heard I booked this, it was huge for me.
What was the experience like playing the role and putting on Dora’s costume?
It was the best experience I could have ever asked for as my first movie to work on. Being able to film in Australia and wear her costume was just amazing. I remember the first time I put on her costume I looked so much like her. Then talking like her made me really feel like Dora. The last day putting on her costume I was really sad because that was the last day I was going to be Dora.
What was it like on set of the production?
The set was really cool. I always felt like I was in a real jungle. Her house was on top of a lake and my bedroom was on top of the water. I would love to really live in a house like that. The whole cast and crew were so fun to work with. I made friends with some of the crew and spent a lot of time with them playing around and having fun.
Did you get chance to spend much time with Isabela Moner, who plays the older Dora, in-between takes?
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to work with her but I did spend some time with her while schooling and I also took some pictures with her and we both had our Dora costume on and really did look alike.
Do you know if there will be a premiere and if you’ll be attending?
Yes, we just had our premiere last Sunday and it was so much fun. The whole day was like a dream come true. I was able to sign my first autograph, that was my favourite part of the day!
Had you visited Gold Coast before filming there?
No, I didn’t think I would ever visit Australia because it’s such a long flight, but having first class really helped make it easier.
What do you remember from filming ‘Clouds’ and ‘Bernice’, and can you tell us something about each?
Filming Clouds was a lot of fun because I was a student in a classroom so I had a lot of kids to hang out with. For the film Bernice, I played young Bernice in some flashback scenes. The directors on both projects were very nice to work with.
We understand your passions include gymnastics and singing, how often do you get to do these?
I’m always taking some kind of class like Gymnastics, Tumbling, Ariel classes and I also take an instrument class at school. I usually have these classes later in the day or on the weekends.
What films have you watched recently that you have enjoyed?
I recently watched The Karate Kid and I really enjoyed it. I like how he’s so brave and is not afraid of the bullies and stands up for himself.
Do you have a favourite actor or actress?
Yes, one of my favourite actors is Millie Bobby Brown. I love how she acts on Stranger Things and she seems like she’s a really nice person.
What do you enjoy most about your career?
I enjoy playing different roles and when I book something, I love being on set. I also love to have fans who want to know about me. It’s all really exciting.
What are your future career plans?
I continue going out on different projects. I would love to be in a TV show and of course, work on more movies.
