In the psychological thriller series The Stolen Girl, Robyn Betteridge plays Josephine Thibault for Disney+/Hulu, and in the BBC series The Gold, she plays Palmer’s Daughter and will reprise her role for the announced Series 2. Robyn plays Margaret Grey in the Amazon Prime historical fantasy series My Lady Jane – the younger sister of Jane (Emily Bader) and Katherine (Isabella Brownson), with Anna Chancellor playing her mother Lady Frances Grey, and Dominic Cooper as Lord Seymour. For her first TV role, Robyn played Helga Grinwell in The Wheel of Time, and went on to film as Young Kit in Willow, with the latter role seeing her win an award at the Young Artist Awards, which she attended in Los Angeles. Upcoming, Robyn has a few things in the works, and alongside acting, she is a model and contortionist. We recently caught up with Robyn about playing Josephine Thibault in The Stolen Girl, filming as Margaret Grey in My Lady Jane and her further projects including The Gold, Willow and The Wheel of Time.

You can currently be seen playing Josephine Thibault in the new Disney+/Hulu series The Stolen Girl; was there anything that drew you to the role, and how did you feel finding out you’d booked the project?

I was really drawn to Josephine because she’s brave and curious, and there’s so much mystery around her story. When I found out I’d booked the role, I was honestly in shock – I couldn’t believe it! I remember just being really excited and a bit emotional because I had worked hard to get this role.

Can you tell us about The Stolen Girl and how would you describe Josephine?

It’s a psychological thriller about Elisa, a mother whose daughter Lucia vanishes after a sleepover, uncovering dark secrets and hidden pasts. Josephine, or Josie, is Lucia’s new friend and the daughter of Nina (formerly Rebecca). She’s kind, innocent, and unknowingly at the centre of a complex emotional story.

How was it reading the scripts for the first time and being part of telling the story?

Reading the scripts was amazing – I couldn’t stop turning the pages. Every episode had twists and moments where I’d gasp! It was such an honour to help bring it to life, especially with a story that keeps you guessing and really makes you feel something.

What was Josephine like to play and what did you enjoy most about taking on the role?

Playing Josephine was emotional and rewarding – she’s a sweet, trusting girl caught in difficult circumstances. The most enjoyable part was exploring her innocence and genuine connection with Lucia, even as the story around them grew darker.

In the BBC series The Gold, you play Palmer’s Daughter in Series 1 and will be reprising your role in Series 2; what is it like filming for The Gold and having your real-life sister Skylar Betteridge play your sister on screen?

Filming The Gold was such a great experience. It’s so well made, and the cast and crew were all lovely. Having Skylar play my sister made it even more special – it’s like bringing a part of our real life into the show. We had a lot of fun between takes and travelled abroad together to film!

How did you find the experience filming as Margaret Grey in My Lady Jane for Amazon Prime, and what was it like getting into character?

Margaret Grey is the younger sister of Jane and Katherine. She has a playing age of 10 and is the family’s foul-mouthed troublemaker, with a naughty, wild side. She is the sort of girl who pulls the wings off butterflies! She is wise beyond her years and has a big personality. She longs for love and motherly acceptance. It was so much fun playing her, I got to do and say naughty things which I found easy lol!

What was it like on set of My Lady Jane, and how was it working on a historical fantasy series?

The set was absolutely beautiful – it really felt like we were in the 1500s! I loved all the costumes and how imaginative everything was. Working on a historical fantasy gave us so much room to be creative, and everyone on set made it feel magical.

What are some of your favourite memories from meeting and filming with the rest of the My Lady Jane cast?

One incident that springs to mind is when we were rehearsing a scene and I had to throw an apple and it accidentally hit my on-set mother, Frances Grey, in the head (this role was played by Anna Chancellor in the series). Everyone found it funny and, thankfully, Anna wasn’t hurt.

Dominic Cooper used to steal the area I was allocated for on-set learning and turn it into his office, so I got my own back and used his trailer as it was bigger than mine! Dominic was so lovely and used to play hand clapping games with me – we got really fast by the end of filming!

I had so many funny, belly laughing moments on set, especially with Isabella (Brownson), who plays Katherine Grey. She really was like my big sister on and off set.

How was your time involved with an episode of Willow as Young Kit in 2023?

Willow was such an exciting project. Playing Young Kit gave me the chance to explore a really adventurous character in a fantasy world. The sets were incredible, and I got to do stunt training with swords, which was something new for me.

What do you remember most from your first TV role as Helga Grinwell in The Wheel of Time?

That was such a special experience because it was my first time on a big set. I remember being amazed at all the details – the props, the costumes, the way everything came together. Everyone was so kind, and it made me really fall in love with acting even more.

You’ve been nominated for and won Young Artist Awards; how does it feel being recognised for your acting roles, and what are the Young Artist Awards like to attend?

It’s such an honour! I still can’t really believe it sometimes. Winning the award for Willow meant a lot to me. The ceremony in Los Angeles was so fun – it’s lovely to meet other young actors and just celebrate each other’s work.

We understand you also work as a model and contortionist, can you tell us about this?

Yes! I’ve always loved movement and performing, and contortion was something I started when I was younger in dance and gymnastics. It’s helped with acting too, especially when I need to do something physical. Modelling is so fun as you get to wear clothes you might not normally buy or can’t afford lol. I love editorials – they are so cool as it’s like telling a story through photos.

How did you get into acting, and was it always something you wanted to do professionally?

It was kind of by accident. I started off first modelling with my agency Kids London Ltd where I was introduced to Spotlight and started getting commercial castings and then acting castings. I was very lucky as my hit rate of getting roles or very close to getting roles was good. I really hope to carry on acting into adulthood.

Do you have any favourite films and TV shows to watch?

It might sound a bit odd, but I don’t spend my spare time watching much TV. I do I love Stranger Things and still love cartoons.

What do you enjoy doing away from acting and performing?

I really love to spend time with my friends, they mean so much to me and are very supportive. I also enjoy crafting, experimenting with fashion and makeup.

What are you hoping this year brings for your career, and do you have any projects coming up that you can talk about?

I’m really grateful for the roles I’ve had so far and just hope I keep getting the chance to play interesting characters and grow as an actress. There are a few things in the works that I can’t say much about yet, but I’m very excited for what’s ahead!
