With the Nickelodeon series The Thundermans running from 2015 to 2018, Maya Le Clark played Chloe Thunderman, reprising her role for last year’s TV film The Thundermans Return, working with a cast including Kira Kosarin as Phoebe and Jack Griffo as Max. Earlier this year saw the release of new spin-off sequel series The Thundermans: Undercover with Maya, Kira and Jack starring in the series, and over the years, Maya has attended the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, and on her first time of attending, the original The Thundermans series won Best Kids TV Show. Further projects for Maya include playing Brea for episodes of Knight Squad on Nickelodeon, and in 2021, she played Young Cleo in DC’s The Suicide Squad, which was written by James Gunn. We found out from Maya about playing Chloe in The Thundermans, reprising her role last year for The Thundermans Return followed by this year’s spin-off sequel The Thundermans: Undercover and being part of Knight Squad and The Suicide Squad.

Since 2015, you have played the role of Chloe Thunderman in the Nickelodeon franchise The Thundermans, how was it hearing that you’d be reprising your role for The Thundermans Return last year?

I was excited because I would get to play Chloe as an older person, really get to use my acting skills, and just be able to see how it was going to be on set since it had been a while. Chloe was just meant to be a cute little sassy character that would say “Baby!” and that was enough to get everyone to smile and laugh. So to get to reprise the role as a 12 year old was pretty lucky!

What was The Thundermans Return like to film and how was it reuniting with the rest of the cast, which includes Kira Kosarin and Jack Griffo as Phoebe and Max Thunderman?

It was really fun because I got to work with the whole family as an older person versus just as a little girl. It was really different to do scenes with everyone and even just hang out with them in between takes. Everyone was so helpful and I learned a lot.

What was it like seeing the fan response to the TV film and having the new spin-off and sequel series – The Thundermans: Undercover – commissioned?

When I found out how much the fans liked the movie, it was pretty great. I felt happy because I wasn’t sure what people would think of older Chloe so when the movie did really well and they decided to do a spin-off it helped me to see that people still love The Thundermans and Chloe. And with the new series I was nervous but also excited because I could really build up Chloe’s character.

In January, The Thundermans: Undercover premiered on Nickelodeon, can you tell us about the new series?

Sure! The new series is about Phoebe and Max getting a secret mission and taking Chloe along so she could live a normal life, versus as a superhero in Hiddenville. It’s really funny because Max and Phoebe have to try to be like parents to Chloe and they are not that great at it. And another cool thing is Chloe gets her own best friends like Max and Phoebe had in the original series. Chloe gets her own Cherry!

How would you describe your character Chloe and how would you say she has changed since the original series ended in 2018?

When Chloe was younger, she was just sassy and cute and now I feel like she is meant to be really clever and calm. She does still have some sassiness though and she kind of has to with Phoebe and Max being like her parents!

What has it been like getting back into character as Chloe now that you are older and what is she like to play?

Well, I feel really lucky that I got to play an older version of Chloe. It has been a little difficult because when Chloe was younger, she was just cute and had a defined character and even a catchphrase that everyone seemed to love. And now playing the older Chloe, I had to kind of figure out who she was going to be and I pretty much learned that as we filmed the episodes. Now I feel like I know who she is and can continue to develop her character in the future!

How was it reading the new scripts for the first time, and did you have a favourite scene to film?

At first I thought it was going to be a lot because I had never had that many lines before. But, I got used to it and kind of had my own way of memorising the scenes.

My favourite scene was my first fight scene because I’m really athletic so I like that I got to do that and actually act like a real superhero. I would love to get more fight scenes in the future so Jed, if you’re reading this, more fight scenes please 😃

Is there anything you have enjoyed most about filming Series 1 of the new spin-off series?

Getting to be on set with kids my age! Making new friends with Kinley (Cunningham), who plays Booch, and Nathan (Broxton), who plays Jinx. Also, it was cool to be able to work more closely with Jack and Kira since we got to film so many scenes together. And when Diego (Velazquez), Rosa (Blasi), and Chris (Tallman) were filming, we had so much fun hanging out and filming with me as the older Chloe.

What are some of your stand-out memories from being part of The Thundermans from 2015 to 2018?

I remember a lot of crew on set that really helped me and went out of their way to make me feel happy and comfortable. Like, the director Trevor Kirschner would sometimes stop a scene just to make me smile. He still does that actually! And Jonathan Judge would pick me up and carry me around. I also remember having two baby wranglers on set named Melissa and Lauren. They are twin sisters and they were just so awesome.

And we did live shows and that was fun to do the scenes in front of a live audience. That was like a big party. Rosa and Chris were so fun to do scenes with and they always made me laugh.

How do you find the experience attending the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards?

Well, my first Kids’ Choice Awards we won the Blimp for Best Kids Show. I had an intuition right before we won because we were being interviewed and Chris Tallman, who plays Chloe’s dad, asked me if I thought we were going to win and I said, “Yes!” and then we did! So that was really cool.

Then this last KCAs was my first time ever doing something other than attend. I got to co-host the pre-KCA show with Brady Noon. I was a little nervous but we had a lot of fun. Maybe next time I’ll get slimed!

Also for Nickelodeon, you played Brea in episodes of Knight Squad, what do you remember from filming this show?

I don’t really remember much except that I had no front teeth and so they put that in the script, which was funny!

In 2021, you were in the cast of The Suicide Squad as Young Cleo, what was this film like to be part of?

Well, I got to work with James Gunn and Taika Waititi so there’s that. It was really fun to work on a big film with new people. It was also my first ever film so to get to work with such amazing people was great. Also, even though the scenes were short, they were very dramatic, and I had to cry, laugh, everything, so that was new since I had only done comedy.

How did you get into acting and do you have a favourite aspect of working in the industry?

I got into acting with a little bit of beginner’s luck. My older sister, Olivia, had been modelling and doing commercials and stuff since she was like one and she was working a lot so I would go with them. My mom said I was back and forth to LA like 200 times by the time I was three. I guess one day I put my hands on my hips and said, “How come I don’t get to audition?” So I started auditioning and The Thundermans was my second or third audition!

My favourite part has been getting to meet new people and getting to play different characters. Also, getting to live in Vancouver was cool because I’d never lived in a city before.

Have you been given any advice over your time as an actor so far that has stuck with you?

Yes! That when I have a line to practice four different choices on how to say it. Oh, and that acting can’t just be about the money! It has to be because I enjoy it too.

What are some of your favourite films and TV shows to watch?

Movies: Clueless, Soul Surfer, and Aquamarine. I’m a sucker for a mermaid movie.

TV: Modern Family, Ginny and Georgia, Never Have I Ever, Bella and the Bulldogs, and anything Thundermans, of course!

How do you like to spend your free time?

Lots of soccer and hanging out with my friends! I play on a competitive club team and a futsal team, so sometimes I play soccer five to seven times per week. And when I’m not playing soccer, I just want to hang out with my friends. Just like Chloe, I kind of just like living a normal life.

What are you hoping this year brings for you?

I hope that I get better at soccer and my team gets better together. I hope I continue to build up my friendships and, I don’t know, maybe book a film or get a second season on The Thundermans: Undercover!
