In 2018, then twenty-three years old, Eric Anthony Lopez made history by becoming the youngest actor since the musical first debuted on Broadway and in the West End in the 80s, cast to tackle the leading opera tenor role of Ubaldo Piangi in The Phantom of the Opera franchise, which he is currently covering (in addition to playing Passarino eight times a week) on the World Tour through 2023. We recently spoke with Eric to talk about how 2020 has changed him, what Hispanic Heritage Month means to him and being in the only major production safely running in the world during the COVID-19 pandemic.

En 2018, el entonces joven Eric Anthony López, de veintitrés años, hizo historia al convertirse en el actor más joven desde que el musical debutó por primera vez en Broadway y West End en los años 80, con un reparto que le permitió interpretar el papel principal de tenor de ópera de Ubaldo Piangi en la franquicia El Fantasma de la Ópera, que actualmente está cubriendo (además de interpretar Passarino ocho veces a la semana) en la Gira Mundial hasta el año 2023. Recientemente hablamos con Eric para hablar sobre cómo 2020 lo ha cambiado, lo que significa el Mes de la Herencia Hispana para él y estar en la única producción importante que funciona de manera segura en el mundo durante la pandemia de COVID-19.

The last time we caught up was in December 2019. The World Tour Company of Broadway’s Longest Running Musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is still giving performances in Seoul and Daegu, while all Broadway and West End shows are temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Daily Mail and The New York Times has PHANTOM as the only major commercial running in the world. How does that feel?

We are so incredibly fortunate to safely continue on during these turbulent times and we do not take this opportunity to show the world that it is indeed possible lightly. South Korea has implemented a “track and trace” method for all audience members and everyone associated with the show from the top down. No one enters the building without a mask… everyone backstage is indeed masked, cast only remove our masks when it’s time to go on the stage. We have been tested and go through two temperature checkpoints every time we step foot in the building. The theatre is disinfected at the highest quality before and after every performance. Everyone who comes as an audience member has a temperature check and wears a mask for the duration of the show and then for their entire experience in the theatre. Our producers on all levels and Korean government have been really instrumental in that everyone is safe and getting tested for COVID-19 company-wide. When our Seoul engagement started, the timing was just really perfect in that when we arrived, the March cases were under control and in single digits. South Korea has really shown the world what is possible with due diligence and safe practices. The PHANTOM franchise and everyone company-wide from the top all the way down has taken “continuing on” so seriously. I think we are also aware that there are a lot of eyes on us right now… New York Times, London’s Daily Mail, countless morning shows in Australia, Italy, London, New York… around the world really. We take being the example extremely seriously and we know that this will be something written about in the history books… well history record online somewhere I guess haha.

La última vez que hablamos fue en diciembre de 2019. La Compañía de la Gira Mundial del Musical más antiguo de Broadway: EL FANTASMA DE LA OPERA sigue dando actuaciones en Seúl y Daegu, mientras que todos los espectáculos de Broadway y West End están temporalmente cerrados debido a la pandemia de COVID-19. El Daily Mail y el New York Times consideran a EL FANTASMA como el único gran espectáculo comercial del mundo. ¿Cómo se siente eso?

Somos tan increíblemente afortunados de continuar de forma segura durante estos tiempos turbulentos y no aprovechamos esta oportunidad para mostrarle al mundo que, en efecto, es posible a la ligera. Corea del Sur ha implementado un “programa de rastreo” para todos los miembros de la audiencia y todos los asociados con el show de arriba hacia abajo. Nadie entra en el edificio sin una mascarilla… todos los que están detrás del escenario están efectivamente enmascarados, el elenco sólo se quita las mascarillas cuando es el momento de salir al escenario. Nuestros productores en todos los niveles y el gobierno coreano han sido muy importantes para que todos estén seguros y se hagan pruebas de COVID-19 en toda la compañía. Cuando nuestro compromiso en Seúl comenzó, el momento era perfecto ya que cuando llegamos los casos de marzo estaban bajo control y en un solo dígito. Corea del Sur ha mostrado al mundo lo que es posible con la diligencia debida y las prácticas seguras. La franquicia EL FANTASMA y toda la compañía desde arriba hasta abajo se lo ha tomado muy en serio. Creo que también somos conscientes de que ahora mismo hay una gran cantidad de miradas sobre nosotros… El New York Times, el London’s Daily, innumerables programas matutinos en Australia, Italia, Londres, Nueva York… en todo el mundo. Nos tomamos este momento extremadamente en serio y sabemos que esto será algo que se escribirá en los libros de historia… bueno el registro de la historia en línea en algún lugar supongo jaja.

As a Puerto Rican, a Latino artist, as a human and in the time we are living in, how do you feel about the climate and how do you want to use your platform to further that conversation?

First of all. Black Lives Matter. Period. Non negotiable. I feel it is vital, I say that straight away.

I truly feel we are at a long overdue turning point in history. I am the beneficiary quite frankly of privilege. I’m white passing. Period. I’ve never had to deal with discrimination or bias based on the shade in which my skin appears in this world… I have family members who have indeed struggled with this… but I frankly don’t. I’m Puerto Rican with a typical latin last name… but you’d never know that if I was just walking down the street. I have to realise and reckon with the fact that I’ll never truly understand what my black and brown friends and family are going through and have been going through since their birth. I think our society just needs to be more compassionate and conscious of each other’s views and their humanity.

As far as the industry is concerned, we are at a point where diversity and inclusion — those stories are being full realised, produced and considered and heard — in both stage and in film. Movers and shakers in both industries also know that they can invest in making this type of product that is truly inclusive and diverse in what you see on screen/on stage and what you don’t see (behind the camera/behind stage) but also gives producing security and the best ROI [Return of Investment]. I just hope it’s not just a trend. I would love to see more diverse stories get told on all mediums. It’s imperative to moving forward as a culture and as a society.

Como puertorriqueño, como artista latino, como ser humano y en los tiempos que estamos viviendo, ¿cómo te sientes con respecto al clima y cómo quieres usar tu plataforma para promover esa conversación?

Primero que nada. Black Lives Matter. Punto. No es negociable. Siento que es fundamental que lo diga de inmediato.

Siento que en realidad nos encontramos en un punto de inflexión histórico desde hace mucho tiempo. Francamente, soy el beneficiario de un privilegio. Soy blanco de paso. Punto. Nunca he tenido que lidiar con la discriminación o los prejuicios por el tono en el que aparece mi piel en este mundo… Tengo familiares que de hecho han luchado con esto… pero, francamente, yo no. Soy puertorriqueño con un apellido latino típico… pero nunca lo sabrías si solo estuviera caminando por la calle. Tengo que darme cuenta y aceptar el hecho de que nunca entenderé en verdad por lo que están pasando mis amigos y familiares negros y morenos y por lo que han estado pasando desde que nacieron. Creo que nuestra sociedad solo necesita ser más compasiva y consciente de los puntos de vista de los demás y de su humanidad.

En lo que respecta a la industria, estamos en un punto en el que la diversidad y la inclusión, esas historias se están realizando, produciendo, considerando y escuchando por completo… tanto en el escenario como en el cine. Los promotores e impulsores de ambas industrias también saben que pueden conseguir hacer este tipo de producto que es verdaderamente inclusivo y diverso en lo que se ve en la pantalla/en el escenario y en lo que no se ve (detrás de la cámara/detrás del escenario) pero también da seguridad de producción a todos los niveles y el mejor ROI [Retorno de la Inversión]. Solo espero que no sea solo una tendencia. Me encantaría que se contaran historias más diversas en todos los frentes. Es imperativo avanzar como cultura y como sociedad.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

I’m a Latino man. I’m an American man. My heritage stems from Puerto Rico.

I grew up eating Puerto Rican food. You know… Arroz Con Gandules, Mofongo, Platanos Maduros, Flan… — although not food but you can’t forget Adobo haha, classic rice and beans, you know, that’s what I grew up eating.

Also, I grew up during the Latin music explosion… so that includes Celia Cruz, Selena & The Dinos, Ricky Martin, Mark Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, I could go on. Learn about it, people! Latinos aren’t going anywhere. You know… anytime I eat my mom’s rice and beans, or dance to that music… that just reminds me of my childhood. It reminds me of home. It reminds me of the countless family parties where that music would be on from 2pm to midnight. I grew up with a Latino mother and two brothers… one older and one younger. We’re passionate people. My mom was definitely your typical Puerto Rican mom haha. I’m very proud of my roots. Hispanic Heritage Month means celebrating all of what we are. That’s what it means to me.

¿Qué significa para ti el Mes de la Herencia Hispana?

Soy un hombre latino. Soy un hombre americano. Mi herencia proviene de Puerto Rico.

Crecí comiendo comida puertorriqueña. Ya sabes… Arroz con gandules, mofongo, plátanos maduros, flan… Y aunque no es comida pero no te puedes olvidar del adobo jaja, el clásico arroz con frijoles, sabes que eso es lo que yo crecí comiendo.

También crecí durante la explosión de la música latina… así que eso incluye a Celia Cruz, Selena & The Dinos, Ricky Martin, Mark Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Shakira. Podría continuar. ¡Aprendan sobre esto, gente! Los latinos no van a ninguna parte. Ya sabes… cada vez que como arroz y frijoles de mi madre, o bailo con esa música… eso me recuerda mi infancia. Me recuerda a mi hogar. Me recuerda a las innumerables fiestas familiares en las que se escuchaba esa música desde las 2 de la tarde hasta la medianoche. Crecí con una madre latina y dos hermanos… uno mayor y otro menor. Somos gente apasionada. Mi mamá definitivamente era la típica mamá puertorriqueña jaja. Estoy muy orgulloso de mis raíces. El Mes de la Herencia Hispana significa celebrar todo lo que somos. Eso es lo que significa para mi.

How has 2020 changed you?

It’s definitely changed me. I’m more grateful for what I have. I tell the people I love them today, tomorrow, the next day. You never know what’s going to happen. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. You have to cease the day.

¿Cómo te ha cambiado el 2020?

Definitivamente me ha cambiado. Estoy más agradecido por lo que tengo. Le digo a la gente que los amo hoy, mañana, el día siguiente. Uno nunca sabe lo que va a suceder. El mañana no está garantizado. Tienes que terminar el día.

Any advice for anyone looking to break into entertainment?

Work hard. Preparation is everything. When you have an opportunity you want to be fully prepared. I wasn’t handed one single thing in my career. You’ve got to earn it. It means so much more at the end of the day when you earn it, I worked extremely hard for my money. Any job I have ever done didn’t just land on my lap… it didn’t come because I was born into a fancy rich family with fancy connections or ties to industry. I earned my connections. I earned my first job on network TV when I was a teen, every time I travelled it’s because I was there for work. I earned travelling the planet. I’ve earned my opportunities… and you can too. Work extremely hard and be prepared to hear no 1000 times before that yes that changes your life. Also, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. ALSO – once you get your first big job: listen to your elders at that job… honestly, in the industry in general. They can be a wealth of knowledge. The people I’m close to in the PHANTOM franchise are all fifteen to twenty years my senior. They are in the business and still working at the highest level for a reason. I’d be a fool not soak it in, shut up, listen and learn. Never stop learning and growing. Take class. Okay I’m done rambling haha.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by COVID-19 and by the horrendous racial injustices in our country. 2020 has been a trying time. Don’t be afraid to get your vote out. We’re all in this together.

¿Algún consejo para cualquiera que busque incursionar en la industria del entretenimiento?

Trabaja duro. La preparación es fundamental. Cuando tienes una oportunidad, quieres estar completamente preparado. A mí no me regalaron ni una sola cosa en mi carrera. Tienes que ganártelo. Significa mucho más al final del día cuando te lo ganas. Trabajé muy duro por mi dinero. Cualquier trabajo que haya hecho… no aterrizó en mi regazo… no vino porque nací en una familia rica y elegante con conexiones elegantes o vínculos con la industria. Me gané mis relaciones. Obtuve mi primer trabajo en la televisión en red cuando era adolescente, cada vez que viajaba es porque estaba allí por trabajo. Me lo gané viajando por el planeta. Me he ganado mis oportunidades… y tú también puedes. Trabaja extremadamente duro y prepárate para escuchar mil veces “no” antes de ese sí que cambie tu vida. Además, no tengas miedo de defenderte. ADEMÁS, una vez que consigas tu primer gran trabajo: escucha a tus mayores en ese trabajo… honestamente en la industria en general. Pueden ser una gran cantidad de conocimientos. Las personas que me rodean en la franquicia del FANTASMA, son 15-20 años más grandes que yo. Están en el negocio y todavía trabajan al más alto nivel por una razón. Sería un tonto no empaparme, callarme, escuchar y aprender. Nunca dejes de aprender y crecer. Toma una clase. Ok, he terminado de divagar jaja.

Mi corazón está con todos los afectados por COVID-19 y por las horrendas injusticias raciales en nuestro país. 2020 ha sido un momento difícil. No tengas miedo de votar. Estamos todos juntos en esto.
